Severe Weather Alert: Major Storms Expected in Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles

AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — A significant severe weather event is anticipated to impact the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles today, with the southeastern region placed under a MODERATE RISK designation by the Storm Prediction Center. Residents can expect destructive straight-line winds reaching up to 100 mph, primarily from a derecho—a fast-moving line of severe thunderstorms.

While the tornado threat remains generally low, brief spin-up tornadoes may still occur during the initial stages of storm development, along with the potential for large hail, possibly the size of baseballs to DVDs. Severe winds have the potential to cause extensive damage to structures, uproot trees, and trigger widespread power outages.

Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items before the storms arrive later this afternoon. Although some thunderstorms have already begun in the eastern Texas Panhandle, these are not expected to be the primary severe event. The most intense storms are predicted to develop between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m., with a rapid transition from semi-discrete storms to a more linear complex.

The vast wind field associated with a derecho can span extensive distances, significantly increasing the risk for damage across a large area, affecting everything from power poles to well-constructed homes. Given the multiple hazards of high winds, hail, and isolated tornadoes, it is crucial for residents to remain vigilant and ready to respond to any immediate warnings.
