ACLU Urges Oklahomans to Exercise their Right to Protest Ahead of “No Kings OKC” March
Oklahoma City, OK – As Oklahomans prepare for the “No Kings OKC: March & Rally” scheduled for Saturday, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is reminding demonstrators of their rights. Expected to draw hundreds, the march aligns with a national movement against perceived overreach and abuses from the Trump administration.
Tamya Cox-Touré, Executive Director of ACLU Oklahoma, emphasized the importance of the First Amendment, stating, “People have a right to dissent, be upset, and share those feelings—and that is lawful.” She affirmed that protests are a vital part of Oklahoma City’s history, referencing past significant demonstrations, from Clara Luper’s sit-ins to the George Floyd protests in 2020.
In the wake of tense confrontations between protesters and law enforcement in other cities, Cox-Touré encouraged attendees to feel empowered to voice their opinions. She advised that anyone who experiences interference from law enforcement should document incidents by recording with their cellphones. “The best thing that folks can do is record it,” she said.
Cox-Touré also highlighted the importance of safety planning and knowing contact information for legal assistance, especially concerning potential arrests. While the Oklahoma City Police Department and the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office did not provide comments on specific safety measures for the upcoming event, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol confirmed that it is on standby for the weekend’s activities.
As the protest approaches, community members are reminded of their rights and the historical significance of their collective voices as they gather to express their concerns and demands for change.
