Families Sue Over Arkansas Law Mandating Ten Commandments Display in Classrooms

Seven families in Arkansas have filed a federal lawsuit against a new state law requiring the display of the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms and libraries, set to take effect in August. The law, signed by Republican Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, aligns with similar measures in Louisiana and an anticipated one in Texas. The lawsuit alleges that mandating the Ten Commandments in educational settings infringes on their constitutional rights, particularly by pressuring students into religious observance of a specific faith.

The lawsuit, represented by the American Civil Liberties Union, Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, and the Freedom from Religion Foundation, names four school districts in northwest Arkansas—Fayetteville, Bentonville, Siloam Springs, and Springdale—as defendants. Plaintiffs, who identify as Jewish, Unitarian Universalist, or nonreligious, claim that the law violates the First Amendment and established Supreme Court precedents concerning the separation of church and state.

Samantha Stinson, one of the plaintiffs, expressed concerns about the implications of the law, stating it imposes a Christian-centric perspective on students throughout their public education, potentially creating a hostile and coercive environment. Schools in the affected districts have refrained from commenting on the pending litigation, while the Attorney General’s office is reviewing the lawsuit. The case echoes a previous situation in Louisiana, where a federal judge temporarily blocked the enforcement of a similar requirement, and no displays have been confirmed in schools during ongoing litigation.
