Federal Court Documents Uncover Foiled Terror Plot at OU Football Game
Federal court documents have revealed a foiled terror plot targeting a University of Oklahoma (OU) football game in 2023, involving 20-year-old Landon Swinford from Blanchard. Swinford recently pled guilty to charges of possession of child pornography and transmitting threats in interstate commerce, facing up to 25 years in prison.
The case began on May 18, 2023, when Swinford initiated contact with an undercover law enforcement officer via social media and began discussing ISIS propaganda. In June, he sent a manifesto pledging allegiance to the Islamic State, while subsequent conversations escalated to planning various acts of terror.
On September 30, 2023, Swinford attended an OU football game with his grandparents, reportedly making comments about security measures at the stadium and evaluating it as a potential attack target. Just weeks later, he met with the undercover officer in Norman for a scouting mission at Gaylord Memorial Stadium, where he also proposed targeting locations in New Orleans.
Prosecutors stated there was no imminent threat, attributing this partly to Swinford’s financial constraints and travel limitations. In March 2024, the FBI interviewed Swinford, who admitted to his social media interactions that promoted terrorist activity and acknowledged scouting the stadium.
The investigation revealed seven cyber tips concerning child sexual abuse related to Swinford’s IP address. Both the Oklahoma City FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Oklahoma have declined to comment further, citing the continuing judicial process, while Swinford’s public defender also opted against comment due to standard office protocol. As these proceedings unfold, the community remains vigilant and concerned.
