Oklahoma Banking Pioneer Johnny Vin Anderson Passes Away at 97

Johnny Vin Anderson, a prominent figure in Oklahoma’s banking industry and chairman emeritus of F&M Bank, passed away on June 7, at the age of 97. With an impressive 78-year career in banking, Anderson’s contributions significantly shaped the financial landscape of northern Oklahoma and the greater Oklahoma City area.

Anderson began his banking career as a messenger at Liberty National Bank in Oklahoma City, eventually rising to senior vice president of operations. In 1970, he became the president of First National Bank in El Reno before co-founding American Heritage Bank, serving as its president and CEO. His leadership saw the expansion of Farmers & Merchants Bank (now F&M Bank), which he purchased in 1972. Under his guidance, the bank grew to nine locations across the state, a testament to his commitment and vision. In 2019, his achievements were celebrated with his induction into the Oklahoma Bankers Hall of Fame.

Beyond his banking career, Anderson was a U.S. Navy veteran who served during World War II and was a proud member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. He was also an ordained deacon at First Baptist Church in Crescent, where his faith and community service were deeply intertwined.

Anderson’s passing comes just weeks after the death of his beloved wife, Jo Laverne, with whom he celebrated 75 years of marriage. He is survived by four children, nine grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life is scheduled for June 16 at First Baptist Church in Crescent, coinciding with what would have been his 98th birthday. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested for the Crescent Public School Foundation. Anderson’s legacy of integrity, community service, and family devotion will be fondly remembered by many.
