Pacers Take 2-1 Series Lead in NBA Finals with Strong Late Performance Against Thunder

In Game 3 of the NBA Finals, the Indiana Pacers defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder 116-107, taking a crucial 2-1 lead in the series. This victory was significant, as historically, teams winning Game 3 in a tied series have an 80.5% chance of winning the championship.

The Pacers displayed impressive defense in the fourth quarter, limiting the Thunder to just 18 points and causing uncharacteristic mistakes. Star player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, despite scoring 24 points, struggled with inefficiency, shooting only 1-of-3 in the final quarter and committing six turnovers. Thunder coach Mark Daigneault noted the need for his team to assert themselves more effectively throughout the game.

Tyrese Haliburton was a standout for Indiana, scoring 22 points, complemented by a remarkable performance from reserve Bennedict Mathurin, who scored 27 points in just 22 minutes. Mathurin’s contribution marked one of the highest-scoring outings by a reserve in Finals history. Indiana’s bench outscored Oklahoma City’s 49-18, a dramatic turnaround after their poor bench performance in Game 2.

At halftime, the Pacers led 64-60, capitalizing on fast-break opportunities, with 17 points in transition compared to a disappointing showing in earlier games. However, a rough finish to the third quarter saw them entering the final period down by five. Yet, they regained control in the fourth, benefiting from offensive rebounds and defensive lapses by the Thunder to extend their lead.

Despite some resilience from Oklahoma City, including strong play by Jalen Williams, the Pacers executed better down the stretch, sealing the win. Game 4 will be essential for the Thunder as they seek to keep their championship hopes alive.
