Press Release: Ranking Reveals the Best and Worst Canned Vegetable Soups
When the craving for a warm bowl of vegetable soup strikes, many turn to convenient canned options for a quick fix. However, not all store-bought soups are created equal. A recent taste test evaluated 11 popular vegetable soup brands, revealing which ones are pantry-worthy and which to avoid.
Notably, Wegmans’ vegetable soup earned the lowest score in the ranking. Despite featuring a blend of decent ingredients—carrots, celery, potatoes, rotini pasta, and spices—taste testers found the flavor lacking. The soup’s tomato puree base overwhelmed the overall taste, leaving it described as "meh" and "off." Nutritionally, it doesn’t fare much better, containing a concerning 660 milligrams of sodium per cup, which is a significant portion of the American Heart Association’s daily recommended limit of 2,300 milligrams. Furthermore, this soup is made with chicken broth, rendering it unsuitable for vegetarians.
For those with a can of Wegmans veggie soup on hand, there are creative ways to enhance its flavor. Adding fresh or dried herbs, spices like cumin or garlic powder, or even a splash of acid, such as fresh lemon juice or apple cider vinegar, can elevate the soup considerably. Hot sauce is another excellent option that provides acidity and a kick of heat. For an even richer taste, consider incorporating cheese or bouillon paste into your bowl.
This taste test serves as a guide for soup enthusiasts and emphasizes the potential of upgrading canned soups, which might even inspire a homemade version. For more culinary tips and recipes, subscribe to The Daily Meal newsletter.
