Oklahoma authorities have arrested Landon Kyle Swinford, a man charged with plotting a potential attack on the Oklahoma Sooners’ football stadium. Swinford, who pledged allegiance to the terrorist group Islamic State (ISIS), scouted the venue while attending a game with his grandparents in September 2023.
According to The Oklahoman, Swinford sent a text to an undercover officer posing as an ISIS supporter, stating he had assessed the stadium’s security features and viewed it as a potential target. In a subsequent meeting in October, he further discussed his plans and admitted to the FBI that he would have attempted the attack had he the financial means to do so.
Swinford ceased contact with the undercover officer after claiming to be in touch with ISIS. He faces multiple charges, including possessing child pornography and making threats regarding a synagogue bombing. In July, he was indicted by a federal grand jury and later pleaded guilty to these charges in November. If convicted, he could face up to 25 years in prison.
The investigation revealed that Swinford not only aimed at the Sooners’ stadium but had also researched plans for propane and butane explosions. Furthermore, he considered potential targets in New Orleans, including Mardi Gras celebrations and a local voodoo temple.
As he awaits sentencing, the case has raised concerns over the influence of extremist ideologies and the risks posed to public safety in Oklahoma and beyond. Authorities have emphasized the importance of public vigilance in identifying and reporting suspicious behavior to prevent potential attacks. The exact sentencing date for Swinford has yet to be announced.
