Viswashkumar and his brother had been in India for eight to nine months and were set to return to London. He recounted to Reuters a harrowing experience shortly after takeoff when the plane unexpectedly lost altitude and crashed into a building. Describing the chaotic moment, he noted that the cabin lights activated, and he felt the engines thrusting upward before the crash occurred. Viswashkumar, who was on the side of the plane that landed on the ground floor of a hostel, managed to escape through a small opening when his door broke. He witnessed the tragic deaths of the air hostess and other passengers but was unable to help them.
Sustaining burns to his left hand, he was taken to the hospital, where he is recovering but remains “psychologically disturbed” by the traumatic experience. The hospital’s medical director stated he is “doing well.” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited him in the hospital following the incident. Viswashkumar expressed gratitude for his survival, calling it a “miracle.” His brother in the UK echoed this sentiment, celebrating his survival while mourning the loss of their other brother who was also on the flight.
The plane carried 230 passengers and 12 crew members, of whom 241 tragically perished, including 169 Indians, 53 UK nationals, one Canadian, and seven Portuguese nationals. This tragic accident left many families in grief while highlighting Viswashkumar’s extraordinary escape from a devastating situation.
