Celebrities Flee Hamptons for Tranquil Dutchess County Retreats

Rhinebeck, NY – As the Hamptons becomes increasingly crowded and commercialized, many Hollywood A-listers and affluent New Yorkers are seeking refuge in the serene landscapes of Dutchess County. Discreet towns like Rhinebeck and Millbrook have become the new go-to destinations for stars such as Paul Rudd and Steven Spielberg, who can enjoy their downtime without the constant gaze of paparazzi.

Patrick Amedeo, owner of Rhinebeck’s Pizzeria Posto, highlighted the appeal, stating, "There’s no paparazzi here. They can come with their families to relax." The area’s charm and laid-back lifestyle attract not just celebrities but also well-to-do families seeking space and tranquility—a stark contrast to the East End of Long Island, where properties are often crammed together.

Realtor Byron Anderson noted a significant shift in buyers’ preferences towards quiet locales, especially post-pandemic. "Many are looking for serenity that the Hamptons can no longer offer," he said, emphasizing Millbrook and Rhinebeck’s modest populations of around 2,500 and 1,400, respectively.

Historically rich and picturesque, both towns boast vibrant local businesses and nature-driven lifestyles. They are particularly appealing to those interested in equestrian pursuits and expansive properties—unlike the Hamptons, where even a modest budget allows for minimal land.

The transformation has been so pronounced that residents have playfully dubbed Rhinebeck the ‘new Hamptons.’ Anderson mentioned an increase in Hollywood buyers and weekenders from states like Florida and Connecticut, many of whom are now choosing to raise their families in these idyllic settings.

As more celebrities and families flock to the Mid-Hudson Valley, it appears that the rolling hills and lakes may well be the luxe escape the elite have long been searching for.
