Warning from Oklahoma Poison Center: Stay Alert While Enjoying the Outdoors This Summer
As families flock outdoors to enjoy summer activities, the Oklahoma Poison Center (OPC) urges parents to be vigilant about potential dangers lurking in nature. With call volumes typically spiking by 17% during the summer months, the OPC highlights common health threats including snake bites, spider bites, and poisonings from household chemicals.
Last year, the OPC recorded 363 snake bite calls, the highest figure in 14 years. Symptoms of snake bites can include severe pain, swelling, and difficulties breathing. In Oklahoma, two particularly hazardous spiders—black widows and brown recluses—pose significant risks. Black widow bites cause pain and cramping quickly, while brown recluse bites may not show symptoms for days, potentially leading to severe complications, including renal issues.
Kristie Edelen, managing director of the OPC, notes that as children are out of school, they are more likely to encounter wildlife and outdoor hazards. Parents are reminded to keep children away from sharp objects, hot grills, and chemicals such as tiki torch fuel and pool chlorine, which can lead to severe injuries. Ingesting fuel can result in choking or serious respiratory issues.
Edelen emphasizes the importance of awareness, cautioning that innocent outdoor fun can quickly escalate into emergencies. Parents should ensure that hazardous substances are stored safely out of children’s reach.
