UNDP Delivers Innovative Mines Eye Detection System to Ukraine’s Emergency Services
Mykolaiv, 21 June 2025 – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with funding from the Government of Luxembourg, has officially presented the Mines Eye aerial detection system to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (SESU). This Ukrainian-developed unmanned technology is set to enhance the speed, accuracy, and safety of demining operations across the country.
The handover ceremony took place at the SESU’s base in Mykolaiv and marked the conclusion of a collaborative pilot project aimed at testing and implementing advanced detection tools in real-world scenarios. Key figures in attendance included UNDP’s Acting Administrator and UN Under-Secretary-General Haoliang Xu, along with representatives from SESU and Mykolaiv Oblast Military Administration.
The Mines Eye system integrates magnetometry and high-resolution aerial imaging, utilizing both visual and infrared sensors to survey large areas contaminated by explosive remnants of war (ERW). By leveraging artificial intelligence, it can identify buried threats, providing operators with detailed maps and reports, which inform safer clearance operations.
Xu lauded the blend of local ingenuity and global support as pivotal in transforming humanitarian demining efforts. “Our goal is clear: to restore land access, rebuild livelihoods, and support Ukraine’s recovery efficiently and safely,” he stated.
In a five-month pilot, SESU teams, trained by UNDP, surveyed over 360 hectares in Kharkiv and Mykolaiv, two regions severely affected by landmines. Vitalii Myroniuk, SESU’s First Deputy Head, emphasized the technology’s role in enhancing safety for demining workers.
Heorhii Reshetilov from the Mykolaiv Regional Administration hailed the Mines Eye as a groundbreaking advancement, vital for revived safety and economic recovery.
The Mines Eye system will be integrated into SESU’s operations nationwide, supporting demining in challenging environments. This initiative comes as Ukraine faces significant landmine contamination, impacting civilian lives and agricultural development.
