Oklahoma Fire Chief Urges Safety Amid NBA Championship Parade
As Oklahoma City prepares to celebrate the Thunder’s NBA championship victory with a downtown parade on Tuesday, Fire Chief Richard Kelley is emphasizing the importance of heat preparedness and hydration. During a press conference on Monday, Kelley encouraged the community to embody the "Oklahoma Standard," reflecting the teamwork and unity that defined the city’s recent triumph.
With temperatures expected to soar close to 90 degrees during the parade, Kelley highlighted crucial safety tips for attendees. "If you know you’re coming down here, pre-plan so we don’t have an event while you’re here," he advised, recommending that revelers bring hydration solutions like Gatorade, wear loose-fitting clothing, and apply sunscreen.
To assist parade-goers, several hydration stations will be set up at key locations, including the west side of Scissortail Park, the Community Center Court at Reno and Walker, Together Square, and Bicentennial Park near the Civic Center.
Kelley also warned that cell service may be limited due to the anticipated large crowds, which could complicate emergency communications. He reiterated the importance of having a backup plan, urging attendees to seek city personnel in uniform for assistance in emergencies.
The parade is scheduled to commence at 10:30 a.m., and leaders from various city departments, including Mayor Holt and the Police Chief, will outline security measures and road closures in preparation for the event. As residents and visitors gather to celebrate, Kelley’s reminders aim to ensure everyone enjoys the festivities safely.
