Mahmoud Khalil Addresses ICE Detention and Criticizes Columbia’s ‘Hypocrisy’

Mahmoud Khalil, a recently released Palestinian refugee and graduate student at Columbia University, spoke at a press conference on the steps of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, sharing his experience during 104 days in immigration detention. He criticized Columbia University for its “hypocrisy,” noting its recent claims of support for international students while failing to reach out to him during his ordeal. Khalil emphasized his identity as a human rights defender and freedom fighter, expressing solidarity with fellow detainees who shared heartbreaking stories and lived in crowded, oppressive conditions.

His release came after a federal judge ruled he was not a threat to foreign policy or a flight risk, a decision the White House promptly appealed. Khalil missed the birth of his son during his detention, highlighting the emotional toll of his experience, while his wife, Noor Abdalla, expressed pride in his resilience. He recalled a personal mantra, “I believe that we will win,” which kept him motivated and inspired him to inscribe it on his bunk bed.

Khalil’s case drew national attention amid heightened scrutiny of pro-Palestinian protests following the Hamas attacks in Israel on October 7, 2023, which escalated violence in Gaza. He believes his detention aimed to silence the student-led movement for Palestinian liberation. As he encouraged students not to fear engaging in activism, he remarked on the historical precedent of student protests during significant social movements. After the press conference, he joined supporters in a march, reaffirming his commitment to continue fighting for justice despite the challenges ahead.
