E-commerce and Market-Driven Lifestyles: Eroding Human Connections, Says Hosabale | Mumbai News

Press Release: RSS Leader Warns Against E-Commerce’s Impact on Human Relationships

MUMBAI – Dattatreya Hosabale, General Secretary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), raised concerns about the detrimental effects of e-commerce and market-driven lifestyles on human relationships during a recent book launch in Mumbai. The event celebrated "Integral Humanism: A Distinct Paradigm of Development" by author Ashok Modak, published by the Indian Council of Social Science Research.

Hosabale argued that the rise of e-commerce has transformed personal relationships into mere transactions, damaging the foundational ties that bind individuals, families, and communities. He lamented the loss of long-standing bonds, citing how traditional marketplaces once fostered trust and familiarity—qualities now lost in the digital age. “A market-driven, government-oriented life damages societal bonds,” he stated, emphasizing that platforms like Amazon cannot replicate the personal connections that were once integral to commerce.

Drawing parallels with societal trends in the United States, Hosabale expressed concerns over the diminishing sense of community, pointing out that only individualism and state authority have emerged as key players in society. He asserted that a welfare model focused solely on market-centric lives is unsustainable for nurturing healthy communities.

In highlighting environmental concerns, he urged for a conscientious approach to lifestyle changes, advocating for energy generation methods that respect nature. He called for education systems to emphasize values over mere information dissemination, stressing the importance of fostering cohesive societies.

Praising Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness model, Hosabale suggested it as a viable alternative to conventional economic measures, contending that true human and societal well-being are intrinsically linked with nature.

The dialogue marks a pressing call to reevaluate modern living’s impact on social fabric and environmental sustainability.
