Heroic Rescue: Local Heroes Save Pedestrian Pinned Under Train
VIAN, Okla. — A pedestrian in Eastern Oklahoma is recovering after a remarkable rescue effort by local emergency services when he was found pinned under a train. The Vian Police Department (VPD) praised the collaboration, which included the Union Pacific Railroad, Sequoyah County Sheriff’s Office, Pafford EMS, Air Evac, and the Vian Fire Department.
According to VPD, they received a distress call around 1 p.m. on June 24. Officers hiked a quarter-mile through difficult terrain to reach the scene. The victim was trapped about 50 feet atop a bridge, posing a significant risk to both the emergency responders and the pedestrian.
In an act of heroism, Vian Sgt. Kevin Kirk scaled the train’s exterior, carefully navigating the bridge’s edge to reach the victim. Meanwhile, Chief Boshers managed communications with Union Pacific, orchestrating the separation of the train, which was vital for the rescue operation.
Thanks to the combined efforts, the train was successfully moved, allowing the victim to be freed. Responders then assisted him off the tracks, showcasing extraordinary teamwork amid challenging conditions.
"On a day when heat and humidity were overwhelming, these heroes showed remarkable courage, disregarding their own safety to save a stranger’s life," remarked VPD in a Facebook post. "The bravery of a man is never truly known until that moment is put to the test."
