Tulsa Gaming Seniors Rise to National Competition

University Village Seniors Set to Compete in National Wii Bowling Championship

TULSA, Okla. — The seniors at the University Village Retirement Community are proving that gaming knows no age limits. Embracing the fun of Wii bowling, the resident team, dubbed the "UV Okies," meets several times a week for spirited competition. "Now we can beat the young kids!" exclaimed team member Cecelia Basarich.

According to Wayne Wall, the Life Enrichment Coordinator, "If you can use one arm, you can Wii bowl!" The game not only provides enjoyment but also serves as a source of physical activity, as players frequently get up and down from their chairs to bowl.

The team boasts an impressive record, winning five consecutive years in the Tulsa city-wide league and remaining undefeated for the last three years. Enthusiasm runs high among the bowlers, many of whom have adopted playful nicknames. Coach Salty Cecelia reflects on the team’s growth from eight members to nearly 40 since her arrival nine years ago.

Among the notable players is 100-year-old Dorothy Salen, a founding member who continues to rise to challenges on the virtual lanes, having rolled a remarkable score of 298. Another standout, Davis Joyce, affectionately known as "Auto," brings excitement with his ability to achieve perfect 300 scores, something he’s done multiple times.

As they gear up for the National Senior Wii Bowling League in September, the UV Okies are ready to represent the retirement community against teams from 24 states. The competition will take place virtually, allowing them to participate from their home theater.

In addition to their competitive spirit, the UV Okies engage in charitable efforts, having previously triumphed over teams from the University Village staff and Oral Roberts University. As they prepare for the national stage, the vibrant seniors show that fun and fitness can thrive in any community, embodying the joy of friendship and competition.
