Cultivating Oklahoma’s Future Conservative Leaders

Press Release: The J. Rufus Fears Fellowship Shapes Oklahoma’s Next Generation of Leaders

Oklahoma City, OK—The J. Rufus Fears Fellowship is rapidly becoming a cornerstone for developing young conservative leaders in Oklahoma. Established in 2019 by the Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs (OCPA) to honor the legacy of Dr. J. Rufus Fears, a celebrated professor and classicist, the program offers an academically rigorous curriculum based on Dr. Fears’ teachings, covering topics from the American founding to conservative thought.

Since its inception, the Fellowship has had remarkable impact, with five alumni elected to public office, including Oklahoma County Sheriff Tommie Johnson III. Over 40 Fears Fellows have secured political appointments, driving forward conservative values across various sectors in Oklahoma.

The program not only strengthens participants’ political acumen but also fosters a robust professional network among over 380 alumni. This burgeoning network enables fellows to support one another in their respective careers—whether in politics, business, education, or non-profits—creating opportunities that benefit the state and beyond.

Recognized for its academic rigor, the fellowship is affiliated with 12 Oklahoma colleges, granting students elective credit upon completion. Additionally, it plays a role in helping high school students earn the Civics Seal for their diplomas by providing a pathway for leadership.

With upcoming cohorts forming in Tulsa and Oklahoma City, alumni continue to recruit new participants, emphasizing the life-changing experience the Fellowship provides.

For those interested in joining this transformative program, applications are now open at www.FearsFellowship.com. The next Tulsa cohort launches this fall, featuring keynote speaker Jim Bridenstine, while the Oklahoma City cohort begins in January 2026. The J. Rufus Fears Fellowship is not just shaping Oklahoma’s future—it is paving the way for a new generation of leaders.
